APRIL 2008 MEETING

In one of his first campaign appearances, the Hon. John Michalek addressed the April meeting of the Evans Democratic Club.  Justice Michalek has served for a  14-year term on the State Supreme Court.  He is seeking re-election to a 2nd term.

Deputy Supervisor Karen Connors Erickson introduced the judge, noting his long ties to the Town of Evans.  The judge described some of the high-profile matters that have been in his courtroom, and treated the Club to an exercise in an evidentiary ruling. 

Town Chair Bob Catalino introduced Tom Casey who will be seeking the Democratic endorsement to run against Dale Voelker for State Senate.  Mr. Casey described his background and past public activities.  His webpage is www.caseynysenate.com

Catalino announced that the Southtowns Democrats will honor two club members at the annual dinner in May.  Karen Connors Erickson will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award, and Joe Catalano will be presented with the Honorary Veteran Award.  Joe was recently elected Commander of the Evans VFW Post 5798.  Catalino also reported on committee issues and upcoming local campaigns.

Reports of elected officials were presented by Supervisor Fran Pordum, Deputy Supervisor Karen Connors Erickson, Town Board member Paul Cooper, Town Clerk Carol Meissner, and Village Trustee AnnMarie Tubinis.

The Club adjourned in honor of Kim Maiorana (wife of club member Frank Maiorana), who recently passed away; and with the best wishes for Building Code enforcement officer Dennis Allen, for the speedy availability for a lung transplant.

The next meeting will b e held on Tuesday, May 20th, at the Evans VFW Post 5798 at 7:30 p.m.
