SUPREME COURT CANDIDATE SPEAKS AT JANUARY MEETING

State Supreme Court candidate Tracey Bannister spoke to the January meeting of the Evans Democratic Club, held at the VFW Post 5798.  Ms. Bannister is Village Justice in Kenmore and has served for 18 years as confidential law clerk to the Hon. Jerome Gorski, a State Supreme Court Justice.

"It's been a privilege to work for Justice Gorski. For the first 13 years, we were dealing mostly with trials and hearings. Since he rose to the Appellate Division five years ago, we've handled Surrogate matters, Family Court issues, criminal appeals, civil trial appeals, election issues, you name it. It's been a really great experience."

Ms. Bannister outlined a 2006 federal decision which found unconstitutional the political parties' judicial nominating conventions. This year judicial candidates may complete in a September primary before the general election in November, unless the Legislature provides otherwise.

"The campaign is hard work and I'm grateful to have the support of a lot of great people," acknowledged Ms. Bannister. Eugene Gaughan, Esq. of Point Breeze in Angola, former Evans Town Justice, is her campaign treasurer.

Ms. Bannister is running for the seat opened when Justice Gorski turns 70 years old. She was admitted to the New York bar in 1985. Married for 23 years to attorney Patrick Bannister, she is the mother of Allison, 20 and Peter, 17. She worked in private practice, including under the tutelage of attorneys Jack and Helen Dempsey of Derby, before joining Justice Gorski's chambers.
