Angola mayor Howard "Hub" Frawley led the Evans Democratic Club in the Pledge of Allegiance at the February meeting held at the VFW Post.  The members voted to admit two new members: Bob Beck, Fire Commissioner for the Village of Angola, and Tom Marks, chair of the Evans Conservation Advisory Council and Evans representative to the Erie County Conservation Management Commission.

Reports of elected officials were presented.  Town Supervisor Fran Pordum described that the majority of Town residents saw a decrease when they received their 2009 property tax bills, and reported on efforts made to keep Evans moving forward.  Deputy Supervisor Karen Erickson discussed the County's interest in a county-wide planning board and concerns about this among the smaller communities in the southtowns.  Town councilman Paul Cooper described town conservation efforts.  Angola mayor Hub Frawley reported items related to his leadership of the Association of Erie County Governments.

The Club will hold a bus trip to the Seneca Niagara Casino on Sunday, March 22, 2009, departing at noon.  Tickets are $30 apiece and will include casino and food credits.  Space on the bus is limited; to make a reservation, leave a message for Mark Parker at 947-9101.

The Village of Angola elections will be held on Wednesday, March 18, 2009.  Starting at 4 p.m. that day, there will be a spaghetti dinner held at Most Precious Blood.

Neno LaRusso talked about recent a recent news coverage regarding budget abuses uncovered by the newly Democratic-controlled State Senate.  The Republicans had controlled the state Senate since 1963.  It appears that the Republicans propagandized on the taxpayers’ dime, including hiring some 75 employees to work at the Senate’s own printing plant.  They had formed a small television studio with public money -- including two press aides on hand to help operate it — for the exclusive use of Republican senators to record cable TV shows.  There is also the matter of the "Brunomobile,” a $50,000 specially outfitted GMC van, with six leather captain’s chairs, a navigation system, rearview camera and meeting table.  Joseph L. Bruno, the former Republican Senate majority leader recently indicted on corruption charges, traveled in the van after his use of state helicopters sparked controversy.

Following club business, meeting attendees held a moment of silence in honor of the victims of Continental Flight #3407.  The next meeting will be held on Tuesday, March 17, 2009, at the VFW on Route 5.
