August 18, 2009 Evans Town Councilmember Paul Cooper led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance at the August meeting of the Evans Democratic Club. Cooper discussed the Town's presentation of a proclamation to the Women Marines Association and efforts of the Town's Veterans Committee chaired by club member Anthony "Neno" LaRusso. Cooper discussed efforts to reduce energy costs at the Town Hall. He commended club member Tom Marks for his work as Chair of the Conservation Commission for improvement of the town's fisheries. Marks recently completed a project to develop collection sites for discarded fishing line. "Improperly disposed fishing line can damage birds, fish and other wildlife," noted Cooper. "And boaters know the damage and expense of line tangled in propellers, a motor or a bilge pump." Cooper discussed an upcoming Town hall public hearing to discuss whether the Town should consolidate the responsibilities of the Receiver of Taxes and those of the Town Clerk. This will be held on Wednesday, August 25 at the Town Hall, at 7 p.m. The proposition to hold a referendum on the sale of the greenspace or paper road next to the old Camus auto service station in Derby is not scheduled. Cooper noted that this effort will jeapordize a million dollar investment into the Town of Evans. "It's really a problem, if the efforts of Community Development are going to be undermined like this." The Club’s annual picnic was held at the Evans Town Park on Sunday, August 2nd. Democratic Chair Bob Catalino recognized the efforts of those whose help made the event a success: Ross Guarino and Jim Giarino who did all the grilling, Joe Catalino who obtained donations of several pizzas, Matt Rzepka for providing the sound and serving as Master of Ceremonies, Neno LaRusso and Dawn Csati for running the auction. There was discussion of ideas to make it even better next year. Catalino thanked all of the candidates who served as hosts and sponsors of the event. The hosts were Bob Reynolds, Jonica DiMartino, Fran Pordum and Karen Connors Erickson. The sponsors were Diana Cafferty, Hon. Shirley Troutman, Ed Michalski, Mark Poloncarz and Cindy Glascott. Special thanks went to club member Cindy Lattimore, daughters Nichole and Meghan, and her niece Paige, for running the kids activities. The next meeting will be held at the VFW on Tuesday, September 15 at 7:30 p.m. copyright©2006-09 Evans Democratic Club |
