November 5, 2009 Democratic Proposition Passes According to Erie County Board of Elections unofficial results, the Evans referendum to merge the Tax Receiver duties with the Town Clerk passed with about a 200-vote margin. The referendum had been placed on the ballot by the Town Board. The Democratic majority voted in favor 3 to 2 to let the Evans taxpayers decide the proposition. The matter passed by a 53% to 47% majority, and there was a higher turnout for referendum than any of the candidates. With 13 of the 17 precincts reporting, there was a 24% voter turnout on the referendum. In contrast, the unofficial results showed turnouts ranging from 15% to 21% for candidates. "It looks like some people came out just to vote on this issue," observed Fran Pordum, Town Supervisor. "People supported the Democratic agenda of reducing the size and expense of town government." Jonica DiMartino, the current Deputy Clerk, will assume the duties of Town Clerk as of the first of the new year. In her new role, her department will now be responsible for processing Evans tax payments. DiMartino is exploring ways to streamline this process. "This is an exciting time in town government for Evans," described Deputy Supervisor Karen Connors Erickson. "We have a capable and progressive young professional taking over as town clerk. Jonica has four years of experience in the Town Clerk's Office under the tutelage of Carol Meissner, the retiring Clerk. Jonica's public and private sector work experience will serve the Town in the transition of combining the duties of the Tax Receiver with the Town Clerk." copyright©2006-09 Evans Democratic Club |
