December, 2009

It was an emotional Evans Town Board meeting, as Town staffers and department heads expressed their thanks to Karen Connors Erickson as her 12 years of service came to a close.  Erickson first took the oath of office for the Town Council in 1998 and has served as the Deputy Supervisor for the last 10 years.  Her councilman's seat was eliminated as a result of the June 2009 referendum to downsize the Town Board.

Former board members who served with her were present to offer their thanks.  Former Republican councilman Tom Csati spoke about his tenure with Erickson.  He was joined by former Democratic councilman Joe Govenettio in remarks about how important her mentoring was to their role in government..  Former Town Supervisor Rob Catalino praised Erickson for her forthright manner and how she always put the community first.

Police Chief Ernie Masullo and Captain Charles Danzi described her committment to the public.  "For the entire 12 years of her service, Karen was the Board's liaison to the Police Department," described Chief Masullo.  "With many of her own family working in fire and police service, she understood the day-to-day operations of public safety.  She will be missed."

The Chief and Captain presented to Erickson a framed photograph of Erickson standing with the department in front of the Town Hall.  She was also presented with an honorary police badge.

After other Town personnel expressed their gratitude, Erickson had an opportunity to speak.  "It has been a privilege and an honor to serve the residents of the Town of Evans."  She singled out each of the department heads, elected officials, employees and Town vendors who were present.  One at a time, she described a contribution each one had made in their own service to the Town.  Many present in the audience were seen wiping their eyes.

Erickson's term will come to a closed at the end of 2009.  She looks forward to remaining involved with the community through her volunteer work for Meals on Wheels, her activities at Most Precious Blood Church, and operating the Connors Hot Dog Stand.
