JUNE 2010 MEETING

Laurie Supples DiMartile led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance at the June meeting of the Evans Democratic Club.  The Club honored her father, Mike Hokan, who recently passed away.  Hokan was a long-time Democratic committeeman.  His favorite saying was "No problem, it will be done" when it came to any work that had to be done for the local party.

The Club thanked Fran Pordum, Town Supervisor, for recent fundraising efforts that benefited the Club.  Congratulations went to Club members Matt Rzepka and Dawn Casali, who recently became engaged.

Reports of elected officials were presented by Town Supervisor Fran Pordum, Town Clerk Jonica DiMartino and Deputy Supervisor Paul Cooper.  Pordum spoke about Mike Hokan's contributions to the community.  He described an effort underway with the local VFW to post flag banners on Route 5 in the commercial areas of Derby and Angola.  The resurfacing of Lake shore Road is completed, and rated 10 out of 10 by the County's quality rating metric.  He also discussed efforts underway by Police Chief Ernie Massullo to address underage parties on the Town's lakefront beaches.

DiMartino discussed ongoing projects associated with the office of Town Clerk and the former office of Tax Receiver.  She is awaiting more information from the state regarding the effort to have the local Clerk offices address state-required dog licenses.  Cooper outlined Code Enforcement efforts to address garbage pickup.  He noted that some summer residents are putting the garbage out early, which can create problems.  Code Enforcement will remind people that garbage is not to be placed at the street until after 6 p.m. the night before pickup.

Town Chair Robert "Bob-Cat" Catalino discussed the candidate petitions and outlined deadlines.  The Club's picnic will take place on Sunday, August 8 at the Evans Town Park, from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.  Neno LaRusso, Chair of the Town's Veterans Affairs  Committee, will run the annual "Neno's Auction" at the picnic.  Bring your donations; one person's trash is another person's treasure.

Neno thanked everyone who attended the annual Memorial Day observation at the Town Hall.  He related some of the stories of the service of Veteran of the Year, Bud DeJohn.  DeJohn is a decorated WWII veteran, who received a Silver Star and was awarded a Purple Heart.  He served in the Battle of the Bulge and at the D-Day landing.

The July meeting will be held at the VFW on Tuesday, July 20, at 7:30 p.m.
