AUGUST 2010 MEETING

Anthony “Neno” LaRusso led the Club in the Pledge of Allegiance at the August meeting of the Evans Democratic Club. The Club congratulated Neno for the outstanding job he did for the annual “Neno’s Auction” at the Democratic Club picnic.  Neno shared the credit with Mattie Rzepka, Dawn Casali, club treasurer Dawn Csati, and Club charter members, Joan Keohane.

State Supreme Court candidate Hon. Debra Givens addressed the Club.  She outlined her 23-year long career practicing law and as a judge.  She is currently a City Court judge who has also worked as a Family Court support magistrate, an acting County Court judge, and an acting Family Court judge.

Reports of elected officials were presented by Deputy Town Supervisor Paul Cooper and Town Clerk Jonica DiMartino.  Cooper spoke about the upcoming Town Board meeting which will discuss the purchase of 3 replacement vehicles for the police department.  There will be a vote on the phase two of the ongoing water project which will address streets off Dawn Avenue.

DiMartino discussed the increased activity associated with hunting license.  While there’s been an increase of lifetime licenses, hunters are still coming in to apply for Deer Management Permits (i.e., “doe permits.”)

DiMartino has set up a lock-box agreement with Evans Bank for payment of school taxes, which are due by Friday, October 15.  The Town Clerk's office will still be responsible for the adminstrative handling of the payments.  This will mean that in addition to making payment at the Town Hall, residents can pay their school taxes during bank hours at the Evans Bank branches on Route 5 at Hamilton in Derby and at Route 5 and Beach Road in Angola.  Evans Bank is open until 6 p.m. on Fridays.  Don’t wait until Saturday, October 16, since that will mean a late payment charge.

Town Chair Robert "Bob-Cat" Catalino noted that the Election Inspection training took place in Evans on August 2.  The primary is coming up on Tuesday, September 14.  Polling locations have not yet been announced by the County Board of Elections.

He outlined the financial particulars for the annual picnic, held on Sunday, August 8.  The Club thanked Cindy Lattimore for the great job she and her family did for the kids’ activities.  There was also gratitude to Paul Cooper for permitting use of his water balloon launcher.  Congratulations went to Dawn Casali for the work she put into to creating the letters and communications that went out about the picnic.

Catalino outlined upcoming candidate events in the Town of Evans.  The Committee to Elect Daniel Kozub for the NYS Assembly District 146 is holding a party on Wednesday, September 1, at Mickey Rats, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Donation is $20.

In the race for Erie County Clerk, Kathy Hochul is holding an event at the Connors Hot Dog Stand, on Thursday, September 16.  Hochul is in her first term.  She has announced her commitment to maintaining a DMV office in the Evans Town Hall.  This has offered a good deal of convenience to Evans residents, who would otherwise have to drive to Orchard Park, Buffalo or Dunkirk to attend to DMV business.

Friends of Jonica DiMartino are holding a party at Mickey Rats on Thursday, August 26, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.  Mark your calendars – Friends of Paul Cooper are holding a horse race theme fundraiser on Saturday, October 16.

The Club sends get-well wishes to Corresponding Secretary Gert Jerozal who is recovering from ankle surgery.  The meeting adjourned in honor of Chester Rolfe, father to the Club’s Sergeant-at-arms Becky Pordum and father-in-law to Town Supervisor Fran Pordum.

The next meeting will be held at the VFW on Tuesday, September 21, at 7:30 p.m.
